Well…I kind of fell into it!
Actually, it all started about 20+ years ago.
I began learning the craft of writing effective copy as a necessity while working as a loans manager for a very successful mortgage broker.
At the time, I couldn't even string an engaging sentence together to save myself, and since part of my job required me to write to customers on their own wave length...it was time to learn.
Learning to Relate to Different Audiences
Prior to that time, I had only ever written to solicitors, using their jargon in order to professionally communicate with them, and to not sound too stupid while doing it.
Since they like to use words like prima facie, without prejudice, contemporaneously, forthwith, hereto, and numerous other complex words that only they understand (apologies to any solicitors reading this post), that type of writing simply wasn't going to cut it with the customers.
Not only did I need to write in a language that customers could understand, I also needed to write with a positive and upbeat manner to reassure customers, since most were first time investors with a very limited comprehension of how the world of finance and investment worked.
So, a friendly, everything is just great, never an issue approach was required to keep customers feeling confident and assured that they had made the right choice.
Learning to Write for Money
Since then, my finance career took a few twists and turns and eventually morphed into me heading down the path of becoming a copywriter about 6 years ago.
In the beginning, my mate who is a copywriter, asked me to handle some overflow of work for them at a time they were extremely busy.
About the same time, I started creative copywriting and blogging for my own online organic medicinal herb and herbal tea e-commerce store. That's where I really got a very good grasp of what engaging and effective copywriting was all about.
That venture, I sold a few years ago to a lovely couple with a passion for natural and alternative therapies.
